what it takes

FOOD

Average daily rations can include bermuda hay, alfalfa, teff hay, pellets for seniors, senior feed, and a variety of supplements. As with everything else, costs have increased 50% to 70% in the last 12 months. We expect prices to continue to increase for the near future..

HOOF CARE

For the most part, our residents are barefoot. Some, however, need to continue to wear shoes. Thoroughbreds, in particular. A trim for a barefoot horse is between $40 and $60. Shoes and a trim can be as much as $250.

HEALTH CARE

Annual physical exams are recommended but not always part of the budget.  Vaccinations are recommended twice a year at $50 each if we administer them ourselves.  They can also be administered by the vet at a higher cost.

Emergencies happen....usually on the weekend.  In addition to a standard ranch call charge, Vet's charge, there is an emergency charge.  Total can be as much as $250, without even including medical care This is in addition to any emergency treatment that might be needed.

Worming is done on a rotation schedule, every 2 months. This has also seen an enormous price increase. For example, ivermectin paste was $1.99 per tube. It is now $7.99. A 75% increase. Thank you COVID.
